Coronavirus in Northern Cyprus: Prime Minister Ersin Tatar. On Thursday announced that the government was preparing an economic package. To mitigate the impact the coronavirus outbreak will have on the TRNC economy.
Speaking on a TV programme, Prime Minister Tatar said the government was trying to use the means at its disposal in the best possible way to contain the spread of the virus.
“I believe that the worst will be over by the summer because we are seeing positive developments in China. More and more European countries are taking measures so everything is recovering slowly” he said.
Tatar added that it was important to refrain from populist actions and to act rationally and carefully.
The Prime Minister said that they were currently working on an economic package. Aimed at keeping the economy afloat until the current crisis blew over.
“We’ve met with trade unions, employers…everyone. Everyone is aware of the seriousness of the situation and the matter. I see a spirit of solidarity emerging,” he said.
Asked to comment about the 19-point economic package announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for Turkey. Tatar said that numbers will emerge once they complete evaluating the situation.
Asked about whether or not government will be slashing public salaries due to outbreak. Tatar said that salaries below a certain amount will not be subject to any cuts. But added cuts could be introduced to high salaries.
“We shall be taking steps by taking the private sector into consideration as well” he said.
The Prime Minister added that the country was experiencing an extraordinary situation. Which was why it was important to draw road map. To ensure that state revenues were distributed equally.
Tatar also repeated his call to public to remain at home as much as possible.
“People should stay at home for at least another five to ten days. So that virus doesn’t spread” he said, adding that figures were low due to the swift measures adopted by the government.
Tatar said that they expected clearer picture to emerge in next week or so.
“Once the incubation period is over I don’t think the virus will spread that much. Scientists are saying that every individual who had virus carried potential of infecting 2.8 people. As long as numbers remain low we shouldn’t have a big problem” he added.
Tatar said that life will eventually return to normal. Decision to reopen borders and crossing points will depend on developments in South Cyprus and Turkey.
