These rare parrots have a new home at the Sao Paulo Zoo in Brazil. A center for the conservation and breeding of blue macaws has opened here. Its area is 900 square meters.
In total, 27 blue macaws live in the zoo.
The blue macaw is endemic to Brazil. In the wild, these birds have disappeared due to deforestation, ranching and overfishing. In addition, the remaining suitable habitats were occupied by the so-called killer bees – a hybrid of African bees with European bee breeds, bred in Brazil.
Blue macaws were declared extinct in the wild in 2019. However, two years ago two birds were released into the wild and formed a pair. Last fall, the parrots hatched two chicks.
