VERTICAL MEADOWS WILL HELP CONSERVE BIODIVERSITY IN THE UK

This is an ordinary billboard. But at the bottom, instead of empty space, there is a real flowerbed – only the location is a little unusual. This is part of the new project “Vertical Meadows”, launched by British designer Alistair Lowe.

The goal of the initiative is to preserve the biodiversity of plants in the UK and decorate cities.

25 species of wild grasses and flowers are planted on this wall. They were carefully selected by specialists from environmental organizations.

Such flowerbeds are a small island for insects. In the UK, over the past 100 years, more than 97% of meadows have disappeared, and they are essential for insects. For example, up to three million flowers can grow on 40 acres in the summer. Their nectar is enough for 96,000 bees.

If a vertical meadow of nine square meters is placed in the city, this will be enough to supply nectar to 200 honey-bearing insects every day.

Green walls also capture carbon, reduce temperatures in hot weather, absorb rainwater, and provide additional sound insulation. They also bring city dwellers closer to nature.

The project’s founder is currently planning to create 30 living walls in different cities in the UK, including London.
