It’s every man for himself here. A tomato battle is raging in Buñol, Spain. Thousands of people are pelting each other with ripe, juicy tomatoes. The famous festival is called La Tomatina.
Tomatoes are bought in the region of Extremadura, where they are cheaper. 120 tons of tomatoes are brought in seven trucks.
The main rule of the festival is to crush the tomatoes before throwing them. Also, you can’t bring objects that could injure someone.
Buñol is home to 9,000 people, and during the festival up to 40,000 visitors from Spain and abroad come here. Since there is not enough housing for everyone, many stay in neighboring Valencia.
“La Tomatina takes place during a festival dedicated to Catholic saints. The progenitor of the merry battle was a mock tomato fight between locals in 1945. During the reign of dictator Francisco Franco, the tomato fight was banned. But in the 70’s the tradition was revived.
