THE LARGE SAILBOAT REGATTA ARRIVED IN HELSINKI

These majestic ships moored in the Finnish capital’s harbor look as if they came from another era. They take part in the Regatta of Large Sailboats.

The international charity race is usually held every four years. However, this time she returns to the Baltic Sea after a seven-year break, as the competitions planned for 2021 were canceled due to COVID-19. There are 50 ships of different shapes and sizes from 13 countries. Helsinki is the final destination of the first stage of the race.

The competition started in the Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda at the end of June.

The theme of the event was the poor ecological state of the Baltic Sea. There are too many nutrients in the water, which, among other things, has led to an invasion of harmful blue-green algae. Helsinki is the final destination of the first stage of the race.

The competition started in the Lithuanian port city of Klaipeda at the end of June.

‌The crews include young people with no experience as seafarers who want to learn new skills. The 2024 competition takes place between six Baltic Sea ports: Helsinki, Turku and Mariehamn in Finland, Tallinn in Estonia, Szczecin in Poland and Klaipeda in Lithuania.

The regatta will end in the Polish seaport of Szczecin near the border with Germany in early August.
