The Christmas Fair at St. Stephen’s Basilica in Budapest has already been recognized as the best in Europe. Here you can not only buy handicrafts, but also take a gastronomic journey. This year, almost 200 types of food and drinks are on offer.
The official culinary curator of the fair is the famous Hungarian chef Lazar Kovacs. He visits the market every day and goes around the food stalls.
Lazar Kovacs, chef:
“Since Advent Basilica is now not only a Christmas fair but also a tourist attraction, we also thought about foreigners and offered them an even wider range of dishes. So here we have national dishes that reflect our traditions and true Hungarian flavors.”
All kinds of meat dishes can be tasted at the fair, as well as traditional pastries such as kürtőszkalács cooked on coals, langos fried in boiling oil and flodni.
There are more than 100 stalls at the fair. Local craftsmen sell clothes, jewelry, souvenirs and, of course, Christmas tree toys.
The Christmas market at St. Stephen’s Basilica will close in the evening on January 1. On that day, by the way, lentil dishes will be sold here.
