The driest desert on the planet is coming to life before our eyes. And it not only comes to life, but also surprises with rare winter flowering. The last time this happened here was nine years ago.
The Atacama Desert is located in northern Chile in the Southern Hemisphere and is currently in the depths of winter. Early flowering began due to heavy rains. Their abundance is due to the El Niño weather phenomenon. White and purple flowers are already attracting tourists. Employees of the National Forestry Corporation urge them not to trample flowers and protect the fragile nature of the desert. If there are new rains, the desert will bloom even more. But it will really sparkle with colors in the spring. At the end of August – beginning of September, the grass will turn green, the bushes will be covered with leaves and flowers will bloom everywhere. And their diversity is great here. In total, there are 200 plant species in Atacama, including endemic ones.
During flowering, birds, insects and lizards will also actively breed here. In general, this phenomenon is called a blooming desert.
