Tesla is recalling nearly all 2 million of its vehicles in the United States after about 1,000 crashes that U.S. regulators say, after a nearly two-year investigation, are linked to Tesla’s use of Autopilot.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the Autopilot system gives drivers a false sense of security, while Tesla’s technical features do not yet always prevent dangerous situations on the road. NHTSA required the manufacturer to update the vehicle’s software and operating instructions, emphasizing that the driver must keep his eyes on the road even when the Autopilot’s Autosteer feature is engaged. Regulators say drivers must keep their hands on the steering wheel and pay attention while driving at all times. Tesla intends to comply with NHTSA’s requirement.
