PRAGUE ZOO

The Prague Zoo has a new addition. A western lowland gorilla named Duni has given birth to a baby. This is a rare subspecies of the western gorilla. It is in danger of extinction. The zoo is proud of its successful breeding program.

There are no more than 200,000 western lowland gorillas left in the wild. They live in Angola, Central African Republic, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of Congo. This species is already extinct in the Democratic Republic of Congo. There are more than 500 gorillas in zoos around the world.

Lowland gorillas are smaller than another subspecies – river gorillas. The height of the male at the shoulders is 1.8 meters, and the female is 1.5. They live in groups consisting of a male and five to seven females. They begin to reproduce at nine or ten years of age. Females give birth to cubs every five years.

This is the first cub for ten-year-old Dunya. For now he will live next to his mother. After seven years, he will be transferred to another zoo where he can participate in a breeding program.
