NOTRE DAME: ROOF FRAME RESTORED

A huge bouquet is placed on the restored frame of the roof of Notre Dame Cathedral. According to tradition, carpenters complete an important stage of construction with such a ceremony.

Two-thirds of the roof, built in the 12th–13th centuries, burned down during a fire in April 2019. The fire also destroyed the wooden spire covered with lead plates. These structures are called the “Forest of Notre Dame.” It took a thousand oak trees to restore them.

Carpenters worked mainly with axes. Moreover, this instrument was made according to samples from the 12th century.

Now other craftsmen will cover the wooden frame with lead plates.

Every day, 500 specialists work in the cathedral. The same number of people work outside of it, restoring works of art.
