INTERNATIONAL BEE DAY

INTERNATIONAL BEE DAY

In Acquasparta, a small Italian town overlooking the mountains, beekeeper Alessio Carozzi continues a long Umbrian tradition.

This is a busy time of year. He is trying to increase the number of hives, and also to avoid natural swarming, when the queen bee leaves the hive and other bees look for a new habitat. This can destroy the honey harvest.

His son Samuele helps him. At nine years old, he already knows well that working with bees can be risky.

Alessio regularly collaborates with organizations such as the Meleiros Foundation, based in the historic Palazzo Cesi. Their goal is to support agricultural practices that have a positive impact on pollinating insects.

Palazzo Cesi hosts tours, lectures and workshops that promote sustainability.

Mirko Paciotti explains the threat to bees from pesticide use and habitat destruction. They are also harmed by invasive species and parasites.

Among the members of the Academy were outstanding scientists from all over the world studying physics, botany, zoology and astronomy.

Pope Urban VIII, the patron of famous artists, was also a friend of the academy.

The Lincei Academy continues to thrive today. And on May 20, the world celebrates International Bee Day.
