IN SANTIAGO JULY WAS FOR THE FIRST TIME WITHOUT RAIN AT ALL

For the first time in recorded history, July in the capital of Chile was without a single drop of rain. This has not happened in Santiago for at least 74 years: at the weather station in the Quinta Normal area, the amount of precipitation was zero millimeters. The same is true for other nearby areas, such as Rancagua. Such an abnormally dry July has not been seen since 1950. Experts say there are two reasons for this. The first is the natural phenomenon of La Niña, due to which the weather becomes drier. The second is climate change.

Climatologists say that usually in the Santiago metropolitan area, at least 50 millimeters of precipitation are recorded in July, so any July with less precipitation is exceptional. But what was an exception in the past may now become the norm. For example, three years ago, in July 2021, there was also less than 1 millimeter of precipitation. Moreover, such weather is observed not only in the capital. The central and southern regions of Chile also recorded minimal rainfall.
