DENMARK STARTED SELLING COFFEE IN PAY GLASSES TO GET RID OF GARBAGE

They decided to rid the streets of discarded coffee cups in Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark. More than 300,000 people live here, and many of them are coffee lovers. Within a week, the streets turn into garbage dumps. The same goes for the local river.

Although the glasses are paper, there is film inside. This is what is dangerous for nature.

Now, in some city cafes, drinks are sold in special glasses. You have to pay five crowns for the container – that’s about 70 euro cents. After drinking coffee, you can return the glass to a special machine, and the money will be returned to the card.

Local authorities have installed 25 cup collection machines in the city center. Cafes participate in the project voluntarily. 40 establishments have already joined.

The collected glasses are sent to a processing plant. They can be washed and put back into use. Only damaged ones will be recycled.

The project is designed for three years. If it is successful, it will be expanded. Then it will be possible to return plates, pizza boxes and plastic containers to the machines.
