The fate of this disposable spoon is completely different from its plastic counterparts. It is not by chance that it is planted in the sand and watered. In two or three weeks, shoots will appear here. The spoon is made of wheat straw and has a capsule at the tip that holds plant seeds.
Such cutlery is produced by a Dubai startup. They are already used in cafes and restaurants in the city.
The founder of the startup explains that you can either plant the cutlery itself, or remove the seeds from it and then sow them. Spoons, forks and knives are biodegradable. So in any case there is no harm from them.
The startup also produces other biodegradable products.
The use of plastic bags has been banned in Dubai since January this year. The only exception is for those made from recycled materials. Single-use non-plastic products will be banned in June. Starting next year, it will no longer be possible to sell cocktail straws and cotton swabs. And in 2026, a ban on plastic food containers and plastic utensils will come into force.
The UAE generates more than 6.5 million tons of waste every year. At the same time, 75% of solid household waste is recycled.
