In this unusual New York store, you can exchange your finished books for jars of pickles.
And it’s called Sweet Pickle Books.
Owner Leigh Alschuler says that in the mornings she often sees a line of people wanting to get inside. Leigh used to work as a public relations director at the legendary New York bookstore Strand. But in 2020, she decided to open her own business. At first, her idea seemed too extravagant: she decided to combine the sale of books with the sale of pickles.
Soon, customers who brought used books for sale began asking her for pickles instead of money.
They liked the dill pickles the most, as well as the spicy ones. Many even come here from other states. Leigh says that she did not choose the location for the store by chance. It is located on the Lower East Side, which used to be the center of pickle sales in New York.
