A four-month-old panda cub born at the Moscow Zoo has finally received a name. The female was named Katyusha. The name means “eternally pure.” Thousands of users voted for it during online voting.
This is the first panda born in Russia.
She was born at the end of August 2023 from a pair of giant pandas – Zhu Yi and Ding Ding. They arrived at the zoo from China in April 2019.
As of January 3, Katyusha’s weight was 8 kilograms 670 grams, and her length was almost 80 centimeters.
The arrival of pandas in Moscow comes after many years of cooperation with the Giant Panda Sanctuary in Chengdu, China.
Meanwhile, a South Korean zoo unveiled new twin pandas on Wednesday.
Cubs Rui Bao and Hui Bao celebrate six months since birth at the Everland amusement park in Yongin, south of Seoul.
According to park officials, they will only be seen in public with their mother for a few hours each morning. This will help them adapt.
Note that China does not provide its pandas for free and only on lease for 10 years. After this period, the bamboo bears are either returned or the contract is renewed. However, all cubs born in zoos around the world are considered the property of Beijing. When they reach a certain age, they are required to be sent to China.
