Five days a week, Athena Powell turns her Perth garage into a temporary food bank to help those in need. Everything here is free.
Athena Powell, Perth resident:
“The movement has really grown, so many volunteers and so many people in need of help.”
It was her personal experience that prompted the Australian to start helping the people of Perth.
The fresh food comes from supermarkets and producers. They are delivered to more than 500 Feed It Forward volunteers. It is a community charity organization that was founded in 2018 by elderly Perth resident Monica Morunga.
Monica Morunga, Perth resident:
“Today we save about 70,000 kilograms of food every week. We are feeding more than 10,000 people directly. We have up to 700 community organizations helping us.”
Cam has three children. She says the food bank is invaluable to her.
Cam, a Perth resident, said:
“With the cost of living, the rent crisis and all that, there’s not much left in two weeks. So it’s definitely been a real godsend for me and my boys.”
Today, Feed it Forward operates about a hundred food banks in Western Australia.
