How vertical gardening helps reduce “urban heat islands”

How vertical gardening helps reduce “urban heat islands”

During the hot summer months, cities heat up to unprecedented temperatures. The lack of greenery creates so-called “heat islands”, which are much hotter than the countryside.

Now German inventors have created special oases that will help reduce the temperature. The Frankfurt-based startup has developed an architectural solution for urban gardening.

Its vertical landscaping system includes diagonally arranged roofs with plants that create lots of shade.

They use 25 different varieties of annual climbing plants. Each has unique characteristics such as fast growth, bright blooms or fragrance. These plants also require less root space and water.

Stéphane Diez, designer:

“It’s a static structure that holds the plants for the season. And we grow seasonal plants on it, different varieties that grow up to ten meters in one year and provide shade and fresh air in the hot summertime.”

For London Design Festival 2024, the startup collaborated with a Munich-based design studio and the American Hardwood Export Council.
