Panda Population in Hong Kong Triples with Birth of Twin Cubs

Hong Kong has tripled the number of pandas thanks to the birth of two cubs, a brother and sister, Aug. 15. Previously, there were only two pandas in the city, which did not produce offspring. The new addition is the first time pandas have been born in Hong Kong, sparking much interest among locals.

The cubs’ mother, 19-year-old Ying Ying, and her partner Le Le were donated by China in 2007. Ying Ying became the oldest panda in the world to give birth to cubs for the first time. So far, the cubs are hard to distinguish, but there are slight differences: the female has darker fur and the male has darker circles around his eyes.

China recently sent two more pandas to Hong Kong, An An and Ke Ke. However, both new pandas are under quarantine and the cubs are too young to meet the public.
