AFRICAN-INSPIRED HAIRSTYLING CONTEST HELD IN HAVANA

Dozens of Afro-Cubans with bouffant hair walked the red carpet in Havana. This is the third African-style hairstyling contest in Cuba. Women, men and, of course, children take part in it.

Elaine Calderon, mother of a contestant:

“My son has been wearing his hair in the African style since he was a kid. He has participated in several of these contests. He loves it and he is also pleased that his hairstyle is linked to his African background.”

The hair show was held in drizzling rain, but that didn’t spoil it. The jury evaluated the health of the hair, the creativity of the hairstyle and its aesthetic appearance.

According to official figures, Afro-Cubans make up a tenth of the island’s population. But it is believed that in fact there are twice as many.
