CHURCHES IN RIO DE JANEIRO HAVE RETURNED STOLEN RELICS

Five silver objects, including candlesticks, have returned to an ancient church in Rio de Janeiro. They were stolen back in the 1980s. The police and the Institute of Cultural Heritage helped find them.

This church was recently restored. The administration has also changed. Its employee, Claudio Andre Castro, is searching for the objects that disappeared from the temple. He found old photo albums and determined that in total, between 200 and 300 church relics were missing.

The Rio de Janeiro police joined the search. It took only a few weeks to find these five silver objects.

A solemn ceremony was held in the church in honor of their return. This church was robbed not long ago during preparations for a wedding ceremony. The identity of the thief was established from a surveillance camera recording. He took a massive silver object from the 18th century from the temple. There is little hope of finding it. But many objects can still be found and returned to historic churches. In the center of Rio de Janeiro alone, there are about 20 ancient churches with rich interior decoration.
