PROSTHETICS: SENSING TEMPERATURE IN YOUR HANDS

PROSTHETICS: SENSING TEMPERATURE IN YOUR HANDS

This patient lost part of his arm 37 years ago, and now for the first time since then he felt a warm handshake from another person. A new invention by Swiss neuroengineers helped with this.

Scientists have developed a “minitouch” device that allows you to distinguish the temperature of objects when you touch them with a prosthesis. For example, now a patient with his eyes closed is trying to determine by touch which hand he is touching – a real one or an artificial one.

Meanwhile, scientists say that the invention is important not so much from a functional point of view, but from an emotional one.

Now the inventors will prepare the device for use at home. Minitouch can be integrated into any bionic prosthesis. Scientists plan to place sensors on the fingers, palms and backs of the hands.
