80 athletes race across the Uyuni Salt Marsh in Bolivia

About 80 athletes took part in a race through the Uyuni salt marsh in Bolivia. They were divided into three groups. In the first group, runners covered a distance of ten kilometers. In the second, the athletes ran 24 kilometers. The third group participated in a 42 kilometer marathon.

The marathoners ran not only on the plain. They also climbed the slope of the Tunupa volcano and then descended. The altitude difference was 1,245 meters. That said, the salt marsh is already 3,650 meters above sea level.

[runner]:

“I just ran 42 kilometers, including on the Tunupa volcano. The run is very challenging. It requires strength and determination. There were difficult sections. I fell many times, the salt marsh seemed endless, but at the same time beautiful.

Running on natural terrain is called trailrunning. It is one of the disciplines of track and field. Athletes choose hilly terrain or mountains, as well as deserts and forests.

In addition to local athletes, runners from New Zealand, France, Italy, Spain and Brazil are competing in Bolivia. This is the fourth race in preparation for the championships to be held in Brazil next July.
