Age is no barrier to surfing – that’s what Brazilians decided to prove. 300 surfers over 50 years old gathered on the beach in Santos in the state of São Paulo. Many of them got into the sport just a few years ago.
The participants of the event also tried to break the world record for the number of people surfing at the same time. The goal could not be reached, as only 98 people stood on the boards at the same time. And the previous achievement was 110 surfers. This record was set in 2009 in South Africa.
However, the failure did not spoil the mood of Brazilian surfers. The hobby still gives them joy.
Marcu Horta, a resident of Santos:
“Some people retired and had nothing to do. Some suffered from depression, some had other problems. Then they got into surfing and started spending time in nature, socializing with people and making friends. And they became happy.”
Although the record was not broken, organizers consider the event the largest gathering of surfers over 50 years old.
